Is Full-Time Equivalent an Appropriate Measure to Assess L1 and L2 Perception of L2 Speakers with Limited L2 Experience?

چکیده
The revised version of the Speech Learning Model (SLM-r) regards full-time equivalent (FTE), which involves amount L2 use during length residence (LOR) in an setting, as main factor speech acquisition. Previous studiesshowed that LOR has a significant effect on and L1 production perception but does not explain differences between populations (i.e., L1-Spanish L2-English vs. L1-English L2-Spanish). A reanalysis data been conducted by calculating FTE experienced participants. aim was also to investigate whether assumptions SLM-r are applicable perception. series correlation tests category boundary—between voiced voiceless stops—was conducted, yielding non-significant results. relatively short participants, quality input terms instruction participants could lack clear this study. Therefore, its own may be sufficient account for accuracy perception, at least speakers with limited input, other factors should considered.

Perception of Foreign Accentedness in L2 Prosody and Segments: L1 Japanese Speakers Learning L2 French
In order to examine the production of Japanese-speaking L2 learners of French, a series of perception tests were conducted with 17 native speakers of French (from mainland France). The subjects listened to French short phrases 1) synthesized with Mbrola using (European standard and Canadian) French and Japanese segments, combined with duration and F0 found in the recording of phrases read by Ja...
متن کاملComparing L1 and L2 speakers using articulography
This study uses articulography, the measurement of the position of tongue and lips during speech, as a tool to quantitatively assess the differences between pronunciations of native and non-native (Dutch) speakers of English. In our study, we focus on two pairs of English sound contrasts: /s/-/ʃ/ and /t/-/θ/. Our analysis focuses on the anterior-posterior position of the tongue tip during the p...
متن کاملL1 allophones and L2 sound perception
The bi-level input processing model posits two levels of speech sound processing. In this model, context-bound allophones are encoded separately at a lower level of processing. If this is the case, second language learners should exhibit some facilitation effect when perceiving non-native phonemes that are used as context-bound allophones in their first language. Using a cue-weighting design, t...
متن کاملProsody perception in L1 and L2
The present work deals with the perception of prosodic structure in conversational speech by naïve listeners in L1 and L2. Native speakers of Russian and French-speaking subjects with high proficiency in Russian took part in a prosody transcription experiment. After evaluating inter-transcriber agreement, we analyse the interplays between the distributions of perceived prosodic prominences and ...
متن کاملOn the effects of L2 perception and of individual differences in L1 production on L2 pronunciation
The speech of late second language (L2) learners is generally marked by an accent. The dominant theoretical perspective attributes accents to deficient L2 perception arising from a transfer of L1 phonology, which is thought to influence L2 perception and production. In this study we evaluate the explanatory role of L2 perception in L2 production and explore alternative explanations arising from...
